Epworth Freemasons has secured a national first, becoming the first hospital in Australia to install the da Vinci 5 robotic-assisted surgical system, setting a new benchmark for surgical innovation. Developed by Intuitive Surgical, the da Vinci 5 marks the most advanced evolution of robotic-assisted surgery to date.

The system delivers 10,000 times the computing power of previous models, allowing surgeons to operate with greater control and efficiency while streamlining operating room workflows. Its next-generation vision platform provides four times the pixel resolution, delivering sharper images, richer colour, and enhanced depth perception.

Surgeons also benefit from Firefly imaging and a built-in tip heater on the endoscope, reducing fog and maintaining visibility throughout even the most complex procedures.

A newly-designed ergonomic console supports surgeon comfort, allowing for more precise, efficient movements over extended operating periods. Enhanced automation, combined with an intuitive workflow, is designed to reduce procedure times, improve hospital efficiency, and support better recovery outcomes for patients.

The rollout has been supported by Device Technologies, which continues to guide hospitals across Australia and New Zealand in adopting cutting-edge surgical innovations. Lisa Kirsch, Director of Sales - Surgical & Hospital at Device Technologies, said the installation reflects both the pace of innovation and Epworth’s leadership in medical technology.

“The latest iteration of the da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery system marks another major leap forward in the evolution of minimally-invasive surgery.

“We’re pleased to be supporting Epworth Freemasons in becoming the first institution in Australia to install the technology. Epworth has continually shown itself to be at the forefront of innovation and this installation is no different - we fully expect the da Vinci 5 to prove incredibly popular with its surgeons and patients alike.”

The da Vinci 5 is also integrated with My Intuitive+, a connected digital ecosystem that offers real-time case observation, remote mentoring, and ongoing training opportunities. This ensures that surgeons stay connected with the broader da Vinci community while continuously enhancing their skills.

By being first to install the da Vinci 5, Epworth reinforces its reputation as a national leader in surgical innovation, bringing patients access to the most advanced robotic-assisted surgical care available today.
